Introduction

Development choices today influence the adaptive capacity of people and their governments well into the future. We cannot afford to delay adaptation planning and action. However, many development policies, plans, and projects currently do not consider climate change due to a lack of awareness and clarity on developing and integrating adaptation options effectively.

Intended Attendees

Target groups for the course include administration officials and planners in agriculture, water, natural resources, climate change, as well as other relevant sectors, at national, provincial, and local levels, national and international development cooperation staff (climate experts as well as sector specialists without a climate change background), local consultants on adaptation to climate change, NGO and civil society representatives.

Learning Objectives

The participants will learn the following:

  • what climate change is and how it is interlinked with development cooperation,
  • where to find relevant climate information and how to use it
  • how to think through systematic steps aiming at defining concrete adaptation options at national, sector, local and project levels,
  • how to define necessary institutional capacities to carry out a change process and
  • how to plan and support processes of mainstreaming adaptation to climate change in their institution.

  • Module 9: Take local action
  • Module 10: Integrating Adaptation into the project cycle management

Entry requirements

This course has beginners and advanced modules, and SDS will advise individuals appropriately after reviewing their applications at the entry level.

Training Methodology

The training will take an adult learning approach that will be achieved in an environment of experiential learning, participation, and inquiry. The methodology for the training is based on the following:

  • Audio-video presentations
  • Simulations/ role plays
  • Case Studies

Post-training mentorship

All graduates of SDSL are provided with dedicated coaches to accompany them after graduating, including receiving recent and relevant journals, research, and benchmarking practices on topical issues in their respective disciplines
