GIS Application in Disaster Risk Mapping
December 11 - December 15
Introduction
Risk information is spatial in nature, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) play an important role in risk management. DRR seeks to determine associations between exposure to risk and disease that are spatially dependent. Public health focuses on the health of populations rather than individuals and focuses more on preventing problems. These efforts fall naturally within the domain of problems requiring spatial analysis as part of the solution. Therefore, GIS and other spatial analysis tools are recognized as providing potentially transformational capabilities for DRR and public health efforts.
There is a great need to utilize risk information in planning for effective coping mechanisms of risk reduction. For this, there is a significant need to create awareness among disaster management professionals regarding the importance of GIS and Remote Sensing.
This course is job oriented and aims to impact practical skills in using GIS and RS to overcome the major challenges faced during the early warning, hazard, vulnerability and risk assessment, damage assessment, and the design of risk reduction measures.
Participants will acquire hands-on skills in the use of a Geographic Information System (GIS) as a tool to capture, store, analyze, manage, and visualize disease case data that is geographically linked. The participants will also acquire statistical data analysis skills.
Duration
5 Days
Cost
The individual cost for the onsite training workshop is USD 750 for individual participants and USD 550 for attending the training virtually, exclusive of 16% VAT. Participants attending the onsite training will be responsible for travel expenses and arrangements, such as airport transfers (and visa application, where necessary), food and accommodation, health/accident insurance, and other personal expenses.
Intended Attendees
The training is meant for project managers, DRR officials, GIS professionals, government officials, CBO operatives, NGO employees, UN Staff, and anyone involved in project management activities
Learning objectives
Upon completion of the course, the participants will be able to:
- Describe and utilize spatial data, GIS, and remote sensing in risk assessment and Management
- To develop an understanding of the different components of a GIS and the role GIS plays in solving epidemiological and animal health-related problems
- To improve the data management and analysis skills of the participants
- To perform spatial and temporal epidemiological analysis using GIS.
- Establish an understanding of how to work with spatial data and GIS techniques to solve DRR and animal health problems.
- To Carry out advanced analyses of geographical data with specific reference to epidemiological-related issues
- To expose participants to data capture, input, manipulation, and display by GIS
- Utilize existing sources of historical animal disease information and elements at risk data
- Apply GIS/remote sensing in hazard, vulnerability, and risk assessment
- Employ risk information in emergency preparedness planning
- Visualize hazard and risk information
- Apply GIS/remote sensing to post-disaster damage assessment
