Introduction

Monitoring and Evaluation is an important tool targeting two key elements of development projects: measurement of their effectiveness and sustainability. Ideally, M&E should span the entire project life cycle, providing continuous data and feedback. In the initial stages, M&E can greatly help develop and clarify project goals and objectives. After project operationalization, M&E promotes greater transparency and accountability within the different organizations involved in the project.

Feedback from M&E during project execution can lead to adjustments, all aiming to improve the prospect of ensuring the sustainability of outcomes. Finally, the use of monitoring and evaluation techniques implies that the determination of the success or failure of a project does not have to wait until project completion and final reporting.

The use of maps in the analysis and presentation of report findings in the M&E process is critical, and this is where the use of Geographical Information Systems comes in. This is because using maps to present M&E results is one of the most effective methods of communicating outcomes in a way that many people from various backgrounds easily understand. In as much as M&E is temporally focused, meaning it measures changes and outcomes occurring over time, and GIS is spatially oriented, meaning the technology identifies where the outcomes are occurring, merging the two is critical in understanding project success.

The integration of GIS in monitoring and Evaluation makes it possible to link or integrate information that is difficult to associate through any other means. With GIS M&E/Researchers are able to use combinations of mapped variables to build and analyze new variables. Presenting data as a map helps to understand the significance of where, when, and by whom. By using the GIS to link data from multiple programs, the training will make it possible to understand the individual programs better and the relationship between the programs. Spatial analysis techniques will also help with driving outcome measures.

Duration

5 days

Cost

The individual cost for the training workshop is USD 850 for individual participants and USD 700 for groups above 10 participants, exclusive of 16% VAT. This covers the training fee, resource materials, and conference package. Participants will be responsible for travel expenses and arrangements, such as airport transfers (and visa application, where necessary), food and accommodation, health/accident insurance, and other personal expenses.

Intended Attendees

The course is designed for representatives from government, project teams, NGOs, multi and bilateral development organizations, consultancies, etc., typically employed as project managers and directors, M&E specialists, technical specialists, and researchers.

Aim

The five days training is aimed at helping development partners to monitor and evaluate the activities of specific projects intended to support M&E systems for sustainable programs and projects. Using GIS in monitoring and Evaluation improves the effectiveness and communication of results to management, funding partners, and beneficiaries.

Objectives

The training will enable participants to;

  • Understand Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Systems
  • Understand key concepts in M&E and GIS
  • Learn how to develop an M&E-GIS System
  • Learn about the working of M&E information management systems
  • Learn how to collect data using mobile phones and GPS
  • Learn how to integrate existing M&E data with GIS
  • Learn how to analyze and visualize M&E data with the aid of GIS techniques
  • Learn how to integrate GIS into M&E activities
